Description

Said to have been built in the early Heian Period (806), this is the oldest existing residence in Japan. Its original location was where the dam lake right next to it can now be seen (roughly 60 meters northwest of this point), and it took two years starting in 1977 to dismantle and relocate the building. The Hakogi family is said to have been a powerful Jizamurai family in this area for a long time, serving as village headmen for many generations during the Edo Period, and by then were already called the “Millennium Family” (long-lasting family). The building’s characteristic thatched roof is more than 50 centimeters thick and is re-roofed once every generation (roughly 20-30 years). As soon as you enter, the Umaya (stable) is on the right, and there is also Niwa, akin to what we call a kitchen today, which was combined with the entryway and used as one common space. The custom of removing one’s shoes when stepping onto tatami flooring was the same then as it is today.

Could you understand the explanation?
